The unknown soldier

Save your coins but spare a thought
For the price I’ve had to pay
You called me up in your hour of need
But now you look away

Why would you recognise me
Just the shell of a once proud guy
You used me up and wore me down
Then hung me out to dry

I answered your call and served you well
But I doubt you were even aware
I gave my all and in return
Nobody seemed to care

No heroes help did I receive
I lost my way alone
Fortune it seems, doesn’t favour the brave
In this doorway I call home

I am now army surplus
No one knows that I’m alive
My hardest battle starts each day
Just fighting to survive

So think of me as the sun goes down
And at the break of day
And keep your coins, just pray with me
That change is on its way
